The Kohai vs. Senpai chapter finally came to a close at the WWE Backlash 2026 Premium Live Event, as IYO SKY and Asuka went head to head in what many are calling the best match of the entire three hour show.
It was disappointing that Kairi Sane was not involved in any capacity, having been released by WWE during TKO’s budget cuts following WrestleMania 42. Still, IYO SKY and Asuka delivered an outstanding performance and stole the show with their intense chemistry and in ring storytelling.

- IYO SKY defeated Asuka by Pinfall (Over the Moonsault by IYO against Asuka).
Many believe this was Asuka’s final match in WWE. Following the bout, a heartfelt “passing of the torch” moment occurred when IYO SKY bowed respectfully in front of Asuka. The moment brought tears to Asuka’s eyes and led to an emotional embrace between the two.
In the hours since the event, numerous WWE stars have taken to social media, including X and Instagram, to post emotional tributes honoring Asuka’s legendary career as the “Empress of Tomorrow.”
